I subscribe to all your comments, though regarding your first one, I'd say that unfortunately this protectionism affects not only to the British magazines of that period and in this specific field - high end audio industry - but to any other area. There's a Spanish proverb that says "nobody bites the hand that feeds you". This is the main reason why I decided long ago to stop purchasing specialized magazines. Sincerely, I prefer the opinions of final users.
  3. navegating thru the Internet, I run across with an article published in the November 1979 issue of the prestigious British magazine Gramophone. Just in case it hasn't been published before in the forum, I'm attaching it because it holds some curious opinions and doubts about the historical role of Acoustic Research and Edgar Willchur, as the inventors of "air suspension" in general, as well as some funny comments about the AR 9 and AR 90 speakers. The remark that the AR 90's male speech has crusty character and an over-accentuation on some consonant sounds, REMINISCENT SOMEONE SAID OF BADLY FITTING DENTURES , is one of the most amusing comments I ever seen, a real gem.   6. Dean, when you say that both speakers are fried, I assume you mean that are totally burned, and in this case replacement is the only solution. Nevertheless, if the tweeters are simply interrupted in a point in the coil due to a current overload, then it's posible to rewind the coils and eventually, to replace the suspensions. If you are not able to carry out for yourself, may be you can find a workshop to do it. In any case, I'd thank you if you repport on the final solution, whichever it is, for feedback purposes.   7. I live in Spain and I hadn't any idea about this record. FYI, Ensayo is a Spanish record's label founded by Mr. Antonio Armet, a very enthusiastic bussinesman who, for a time, distributed Acoustic Research in Spain, and by the way very succesfully. The name of the Company was Llorac Audio and was based in Barcelona. Through his asociated in Madrid Algueró-Audio, I purchased my first AR's, a pair of the AR 4x. The label Ensayo was the fruit of the enthusiam of a man, Mr. Armet, with any previous profesional ties with the music. Since the purchase of the AR 90's, the speakers have been working in the same room, being its dimensions 26,24' long; variable width: 10,17' thru the first-half length and 12,80' thru the second one; and 8,20 heigth. In principle, very unfavourable dimensions for short wall positioning. FYI, I didn't get the user manual when buying the speakers. For many years - 10/12 - the speakers were simetrically positioned against the rear 10,17' short wall, beign the distance to lateral walls roughly 2' in order to let a minimum distance between speakers of 6 feet. The overall sound quality was not bad but horrible: soundstaging was unexisting; bass response pure booming with aboundance of standing waves; midrange congested; etc, etc. The second relocation attempt resulted of moving away the AR 90's 8' from the rear wall and my goodness, for the first time I came accross with soundstage, :+ , that is, the perception that the sound was expanded beyond the room bounderies together with the appearance of the air around the instruments. Unfortunatelly ;( , sonic perspective was very distorted with central image backward moved away and more protagonism of the lateral sides of the stage, in a way like an inverted "V". Standing waves dissapeared because deep bass cancelation. Finally, I decided to test the long wall setup under Immedia methodology recomendations, and for this purpose, I set the speakers in the cross points of the even division of the room in quarters, both cross and longidutinally, beign the speaker's centers asimetrically located inside the room at 6,23' the right one and 13,23' the left from the short 12,17' wall, and the distance to the front long wall 2,5'. Both speakers have 12º internal rotation (toe in). Now, listening position is at only 1,6' from the rear wall and the listening angle is 68º, 8º more than the generally recomended. And this are my impressions and conclusions after one month of critical listening: 1) Long wall setup is the best solution with narrow rooms such's the present case. You can move away the speakers from lateral walls, thus eliminating early reflections and, at the same time, lets you to increase the distance between speakers and consequently the soundstage width. 2) To locate the cabinets in the even cross division of the room in quarters provides a natural bass reinforcement. Believe me: it's difficult to listent to modern high end/ high price speakers with the depth, articulation, precission and cleaning bass supplied by the AR 90's when adequately positioned. 3) 2,5' of distance to the front wall provides an acceptable image depth, though to double the distance would be better ( but not possible in my case ) 4) Is the simmetrical set up approach rule of thumb or myth ? Maybe when you have a room the ideal golden ratio dimensions, first approach could be short wall positioning as method Cardas recommends, but there are many other situations where the long wall approaching can give many advantages. 5) definitively, listener can be located on the vertex of an isosceles triangle with no loss of center; our ears can admit 68º - 72º depending of type of speakers, placement and music under listening. The AR 90's work very well with 68º with all type of music. 6) I don't agree at all with some of the AR's OWNER REFFERENCE MANUAL reccomendations for placement: I do agree with the asymetrically setup and corners moving away suggested, but not with the 2" maximum distance from the rear panel to the wall; bass response is good ( maybe a little booming ) but soundstage simply doesn't exist, it desapears. Finally and once I reached my 60's, I know that I'll never abandon this two creatures unless force majeur. If I kept them for many years beign bad positioned, can somebody imagine for I leave them after this new setup ?
  9. Try to remove the boards; accordinly to my experiency, it's much more easy to work on it. The problem is that the boards are firmly fixed with grips to the MDF and removal is not easy. I tried to get it with a grip remover in the same way we do with the papers, but it didn't work. Finally, I decided to do it with a screwdriver for bending the grips, and the pliers to remove them. May be you can catch other better ideas to improve the proccess. SAFETY RECOMENDATION: utilize rubber gloves to protect the skin of your hands, thus avoinding cuts when you strikes the edges of the woofer's holes. Good luck ! José Cuevas, Spain
  10. I own a pair of AR 90's since 23 years. Four or five years ago I reconed the woofers and now, I think it's the moment for doing something with the crossovers or why not, to contemplate the possibility of bi-amp replacing them by the XM26 from Marchand Electronics as you did it. The other chance would be to keep the old crossovers but replacing the old electrolitic caps, by audiophile ones, Solen perhaps, but I'm not sure if this is a good choice. I frankly have a big problem to go ahead: I don't have any idea on "how to undertake the job". For instance, and since the AR 90's aren't initially bi-amped, i don't know which are the internal changes to face in order to reduce from 4 to 2 ways. Since your outcomes are so good, and for sure you have now the best know how, I'd thank you very much if you explain to me the whole process, step by step. Ah, sorry for my English. I am Spanish and I live in Madrid.
