batchman, do you play bass by any chance? I think you dont have enough power for the 1590s to "break things" and move air the same way you can get your 980s movin.?
  2. Wow, either we have different ears or got different speakers. I thought the Maestros were useless. They sounded really harsh and for their size, the bass just wasnt there. Legacy Advents sounded much better and they dont have that strange mid.
  3. Holy cow, is this the worst pair anyone has found so far? I'd part out the woofers and throw the rest in a dumpster.

Are we to believe Tom Tyson of "All-America Acoustic Research" would ever admit a speaker made by the Germans (basically) is superior? I don't blame him though. ADS (Braun) certainly stole the technology of sealed cabinets and dome drivers.
  5. http://i.imgur.com/86X9fdi.gifv I know this is an AR sub-forum but it seems to be the main forum here with the most views.
  6. Well just to get some closure on this topic.. Roy did a perfect job re-foaming the woofers and I got them up and running. These are speakers that make you say "wow". They have rendered all my other speakers obsolete. Such a natural, clear tone. Bass is there when its called for, but not in your face. When the program material calls for a deep bass boom, these deliver! These excel at home theater use, the spoken word is so clear you can hear everything even at a low volume, where when I switch to the advent I am straining to hear it.
  7. Just pass on them.. someone clearly thought they knew what they were doing and I would be SCARED to see what the crossover looked like.
  8. whoa.. who poured caramel into the voice coil area????
  9. I don't know if heat is good when working with glue and magnets...I wouldnt want it to all fall apart. I was trying to gently nudge the dome from every angle to try and get it to pop out but it wouldnt budge. I tried sucking through a straw, no good. Tried a straw with a mortite wrapped tip to get a better seal, still no good. Cant use a pin because its a sealed driver. Just a quick and gentle suck with the hose of a small shop vac did the trick.
  10. Well, I got rid of them fast. Lacking in bass for their size, not nice to look at, somewhat brash highs.
  11. 30 hz test tones are for lazy people. do it right. shim!
  12. I currently have some freshly re-foamed Smaller Advents and New Large Advents hooked up to the same receiver. I'm not really qualified to compare them, but one thing that I noticed straight away was that the NLA's had some real high end sizzle that was very much more tamed on the SA's. Am I correct? From what I can tell, the NLA are going to be better for Home theater sound effects, where the SA are better for easy listening.
  13. I had good luck sucking out a dent on one of the mid's with a shop-vac. Woofers are on their way to RoyC for refoaming!
  14. Just wondering if anyone actually does have their big honkin 55lb ARs smushed between an old Copy of Moby Dick and a model ship. Any pictures? Are we talking about "built in" shelves that would be on either side of a fireplace in an old craftsman home? I doubt any common built it yourself bookshelf you could buy today would be strong enough to hold them.
