I purchased a pair of AR-5s off Craiglist. Both speakers had Radio Shack replacement woofers in them. My question is this: does it make a difference if I purchase set of 10-inchers off E-bay from the era, or, alternatively, should I just go ahead and spend the $ on replacement ones off Vintage AR Parts. There's a set of AR-5 woofers on e-bay right now for $130; Vintage AR will sell new a new replacement pair for another $10. Are there any opinions about which of these woofer replacements would be better. Or, alternately, I suppose I could keep the radiocshack polycone ones.... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I think I am not alone in realizing this forum has a cycle of topics that ebb and flow through the years. For this reason I thought I would research the archives before asking a question about efficacy of capacitor replacement in my AR 58s pair which have the original capacitors and sound identical and OK to me. I came across this thread from 13 years ago that still seems very relevant , at least to me. I discovered what I was thinking had already been expressed by others years ago. I thought I would share. Enjoy ADAMS

Hi! I am new to this forum and those great loudspeakers from AR. I have a pair of ar3a improved with one bad tweeter. I would like to replace the AR tweeters with new ones. The most common recommendation at this forum is the HIVI tweeter. Maybe I would like something more refined. I saw one thread where one member had used the SEAS Excel T25CF-001. Have somebody else used this tweeter? Is this a good choice? Does it need modifications? Thanks for answers! Jesper

Here is a relatively new LD22 Low Distortion 22mm Tweeter from CSS. It combines a smooth frequency response and low distortion and it has been tested by quite a few speaker designers. http://techtalk.parts-express.com/showthread.php?241344-New-CSS-tweeters/page2 Compared to HiVi Q1R 1-1/8" textile dome tweeter, which has been recommended as a candidate for AR3a tweeter, LD 22 will provide better dispersion in the top octave due to its smaller dome center.
