redpackman
In the erudite discussion of speakers and particularly a speaker's bass response, I often run into phrases that indicate that a particular speaker was pretty good down to XX "but most of that can" <cough, cough> "be attributed to "doubling." Oh. Well, we certainly don't want any......doubling, do we?What does that mean?
Steve F
"Doubling" was a term used mostly in the 60's-80's to indicate a high level of bass THD. Strictly speaking, a speaker "doubled" when its output was double the frequency of the input. A speaker whose response was good only down to, say, 50 Hz might "double" when fed with a 30 Hz tone--that is, its output would be mostly 60 Hz.For whatever reason, the term is not used very much anymore, but that's what it meant.Steve F.
