nfmisso
" They will be sat on carpet on a concrete floor should I put spikes on the speakers or granite or not at all? .... "No granite, no spike - try that first.Spikes into concrete will be very challenging. At approximately 60Kg; AR9 speakers don't move around. Mafia1976
Hi & thanks Nigel.I am finally getting round to replacing the caps at the moment & decided to go with Clarity caps, although a bit of moving about is required as some are quite a bit bigger than the originals.I have also purchased 2 pairs of AV18's & will use 2 of the drivers for the lower mids? they look very similar to the originals & im hoping they will be suitable. The 9's will be my front speakers in 5.1 set up when completed although I wont be using a sub The amp I will be using is a Yamaha rxv2600 @ 130w into 8O so hope it can cope. The 8" drivers are a little bit different when used a mid ranges (AR9, AR90, AR93, AR94) than those used as woofers (AR18,AR17,AR93, AR94, etc). The AR 8" drivers are very easy to refoam.Yamaha rxv2600 - how does it handle difficult low impedance loads? The information that I could find on the 'net only gave specs for 8 ohms, not 4 ohms or less - based on the internet specifications, I would not use it with AR9 (or AR9x) speakers. Mafia1976
It's the AV18 but has a similar paper woofer to the 18's. due to narrow frequency of the LMR i hope it will be ok?Unfortunately I don't have the originals drivers The amp can be changed to run @ 6ohms but not sure about 4! But my marantz amp states 8-16ohms but on certain sites it says capable of running @ 155w into 4.
JKent
It's the AV18 but has a similar paper woofer to the 18's.Are those the Rock Partners? Some discussion here: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showtopic=351Kent

Mafia1976
I'm not sure to be honest. But they are the wedge shape & use the same woofer as the 18s 18b & 28s? Thanks for the links gents all the extra info is very helpful. Does anyone have any opinions on using the av18 woofer for the LMR?
nfmisso
Regarding the 8" driver; take a look at: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?s=1b46a282f23cf78ab41c861e1f946242&showtopic=7897Somewhere on this site - haven't found it because I haven't looked - are the specs for the AR9/90 LMR 8" driver. If the DCR matches the drivers you have from the AV18, should be okay.
Mafia1976
Thanks Nigel, unfortunately I can't seem to find the specs of the drivers in question but ill keep looking. If anyone knows any info on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Matt.
ligs
According to Carl's measurement, p/n 200027-0 (LMR of AR9) has a Re of 5 to 5.4 ohms.http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showtopic=6639It is possible that Carl has measured many other AR 8" woofers and he may have the data in his file. As I recall that p/n 1210037(similar to 200037, an 8" woofer used in some AR 18 series speakers) has a Re in the same range of 5-5.4 Ohms.

Mafia1976
Finally measured the AV18's & the 8" are 4.9ohm. So does anyone agree with me that they are a close look & spec to the original 9 LMR?

Lol but I had to put one on as its my first complete overhaul inc caps etc & I'm very pleased with the results Now I have to totally rearrange my lounge to get them both in a suitable position. Mafia1976
Would anybody know what a suitable centre speaker would match the 9's please?I'm from uk so an AR centre is pretty much out the question!
ligs
Center channel match for AR3a?http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/archive/index.php/t-329914.html In addition, you could try one of Infinity's TSS series center channel speakers such as TSS 750 reviewed below. http://www.hometheater.com/content/infinity-tss-750-speaker-system-ht-labs-measures
Steve F
Atlantic Technology makes some sealed center channels speakers with soft-dome tweeters and a "non-bright" tonal balance that are probably a good match for the AR-9 and other ARs.Their center channels also have several acoustic FR-shaping controls that make them easily-cusomizable for many different situations. Plus, AT's speakers have been designed by a group of 'old-timers' from New England, all of whom have an awareness of and respect for the NE speaker tradition.Their 8200e C, 6200e C and 4400 C would be great choices.8200 http://www.atlantictechnology.com/default.asp?NodeId=1276200 http://www.atlantictechnology.com/default.asp?NodeId=1284400 http://www.atlantictechnology.com/default.asp?NodeId=149Steve F. Mafia1976
Thanks for reply guys, Atlantic technologies is like hens teeth in the uk! But I have seen a Paradigm CC-350 Center Speaker. Does anyone know anything about these & will it be powerful enough to match the 9's?
Mafia1976
Finally got the 9's up & running!! Re-foamed, re-capped & sound fantastic on first impressions. Just watched total recall & the bass shook the walls How long do new caps require to sound at there best?
Mafia1976
Finally rearranged my lounge to accommodate the 9's a little better. They sound great but at the moment are just sat on thick carpet. Do you think I should put them on spikes & granite? Or just spikes as its a concrete floor? Now to choose some spikes to put them on, any ideas which might be the best ones please? I just want to say thanks again for all your help & advice with this project. I couldn't of done it without you all. Kind regards,Matthew.
