Cramolin Red

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have experience with any of the old contact enhancers? I have a can of generic Deoxit here, and it does a good job of cleaning up the insides of old components. I also use it on contacts sometimes. Recently, I found a little bottle of Cramolin Red (two-thirds full) that I must have gotten back in the '80s. The blue stuff must be around here somewhere as well. I used some of the Cramolin red on some of my connections (CD to pre and pre to power amp, as well as banana plug to Time Window speakers) that hadn't been cleaned in years, and I could swear a slight improvement in clarity. Am I falling victim to the same audio voodoo I usually laugh at? What's the stuff supposed to do anyway?

Hi Colin

Deoxit is the safer replacement for Cramolin.

I believe that the Cramolin was dropped because of environmental issues.

I have read many times of the apparent improvement in sound quality with both when used on all types of connections, EXCEPT AC connections.

See if there was a MSDS sheet for Cramolin.

When I subscribed to The Audio Amatuer magazine I believe they were the main distributor, way back when.

I went looking for Cramolin and could not find any here in Vancouver back in the early '90's.

I've used DeOxit on all my banana plugs, phono, cd, and tuner connectors as well.

It can be used to clean switch contacts and a spray can is available for those hard to reach places.

I would be lying if I told you I hear a difference with my poor hearing, I just feel better using it.

There is also a gold contact cleaner but I do not own any gold.

Caig Labratories has an informative web site to visit.

I still have the spray can, which is very diluted DeOxit and a small bottle of concentrate, about 1 ounce, that cost me over $35.00 CDN in the early '90's.

You can use a foam type Q-tip and just brush on a small amount, it is red but it can be very lightly applied, rather than glop on a massive drop,

There is a small, as in finger nail size package, for those that only need a small one time amount.

I wrote a long time ago about my wall phone and a loose connection. I used DeOxit and the connection remained for a few more years without any

dropout. Whether I could hear anyones voice any clearer, I do not know. There may have been more bass, transparent midrange and sparkly highs

for all that i know. LOL

Hi Colin

Hi again

Another old thought just came to mind.

Back in my early apprenticeship day's I also serviced oil heating equipment.

We were warned not to use certain contact cleaners as they attacked plastic in some electrical controls.

This did not include Cramolin Red of course as I was not aware of it's existance, yet..

Not going to be much help, but you brought back memories of the time i used some GC cleaner in a yellow can from my dad's business machine repair kit on my Knight Kit amp and it wasn't very long before all the pots were scrapping and fell apart inside! Things can be too clean!

Also a fan of Cramolin Red and still have several small bottles. Always was impressed with it.

Hi there

I've seen products sold in one country and not others over the years.

The chemical may include ingredients that are banned or just dangerous.

As a side note, you can buy 3M cans of speaker sealant in auto body suppliers, but you need to special transport them

These are specially listed here in Canada.

You pay a special surcharge premium for shipping, similar to dynamite, you cannot airmail or snail mail them as well.

My guess is there is more to the lack of information availability than we have here.

It is nice to see it is still on the market at least.

The Audio Amatuer magazine used to advertise it, way back.
