  1. I'v heard both pairs, I think the A25's run circles around the XL's but it may depend on your preference. The A25s seem to have a better mid range and a better relationship between the highs and lows.
  2. So he replaced mine with clarity cap it's a more expensive bigger cap, i think the caps he replaced he told me were leaking to about 7uf. Anyway i mostly worry he put wrong kind of cap or that the tweeter wire is so thin, he says it's better, dont know what he means by doubling the negative. Originally took them in because one of the drivers stopped working, turned out to be a hair somewhere it didn't belong 40 bucks to get it fixed he then talked me into rehabbing the crossovers. kinda wish i hadn't but they are back at his shop now hopefully he will get the other side to sound as clean as the side i like. I hope overkill doesn't mean a tighter deeper bass will make it overkill. i have yet another pair of of A25s as well, unfortunately i bought the stock pair them when i was 12 yo i somehow thought after we moved they didn't sound as clear so i replaced the capacitor with a 4.9 ohm resistor not knowing what i was doing, they sound ok but seem to be a little bit monotone on the bass, now that i know i did wrong im hoping i can swap it back out with a capacitor, Where do i buy dayton capacitors ? With the pair of A25s i had rehabbed you think overkill is just a waste of money but wouldn't hurt the sound ? just curious If the highs are getting less mids to them is that good or bad ? I guess you answered that, it's hard for me to tell because they don't sound the same. they do close but it seems the bass is a little tighter and less likely to warm up the sound, but powerful when it wants to be. The highs seem more confined less range but much cleaner just not sure what to think.
  3. interesting read, i have a rehabbed pair of dynaco A25's that have a bigger then original 5 uf clarity capacitor, he doubled the negative on the drain and replaced the tweeter wires with some kind of thin wire with cotton covers, he says they are much better, but i question weather he changed them too much..... kinda like the dynaco xl ? or do you think what he did overall is better ? it's kinda hard for me to tell because one of them was imaging better then the other side so i'm waiting for them to be repaired again. what do you think do the changed i mentioned ruin the smoothness ? Should i have him return the old tweeter wires and get rid of the double drain ? I read your opinion about the xl, very interesting you seem to know your stuff, i have never heard a pair but i love the A25s so much they seem hard to beat for overall value.
  4. So doing it myself is not a bad way to go ? it's a very clean break did not effect the center cone or surround, but it does go up to it. I had the shop i bought it from replace the woofer from velodyne but its not orginal and i don't like it as much. seems to take more power and is not as effortless as low volumes.

  5. Hi Craig

There really is no suitable repair for the damage to the cone material.

That been said, what ever you want to do with a rubber type glue will be best in an attempt to repair it. Vern

  6. My friend threw a frisbee golf disk into my older velodyne sub by accident. it caused a clean break split down the driver to the center and around the center cone a tiny bit, very clean break did not effect the surrounds. do you think this is repairable with the right goo ? I have another sub but i don't like the way it sounds much, the velodyne is older not sure where i would check fo...

  7. Wow the more i listen to these rehabbed A25's the more i love them, just curious i know he replaced the resistor for one above normal and max, i noticed it sounds good on both max and one above normal and normal, but i don't think he did anything to the normal position on the switch, does it matter ? how many capacitors are in the A25's ? overall surpassed my expectations.

  8. I was amazed when i got my first good turntable, it was absolutely better then any other imput, with the crappier turntable it was harder to tell. unfortunately the nice turntable has seen better days and needs a new stylus and cart, they dont make the old stylus for the cart anymore. it also needs a motor cleaning noone of wich i have money for now. But turntables can sound amazing

  9. i gotta run but hope to talk more i find it facinating

  10. The guy who wants to repair it seems to think bypassing the switch helps a great deal but i forgot the technical terms he used, maybe i should just ask him not to replace the entire thing and just put it on the spot one above normal so the switch is still active ?
  11. Wow! you helped me a great deal thanks for addressing all of my questions, i kinda figured the old ones were better, but that's also kinda a shame from an historic perspective ( 100 years later ). I'm going to upload a bunch of pics, In these pics there is only one matching pair, I have 2 matching pairs and one unmatched pair but i took one lone speaker in for repair ( voice coil problem ), so only one matching pair are shown in the following pics. I got a 20-50 dollar estimate to fix the lone voice coil defect, ill know weds when i got to pick it up. The first pair shown is the pair working with no problems its also the one with the woofer i had repaired due to abuse (laundry basket and someone i was dating hurt) (heh), The black speaker with the red particle board is the left side of the speaker in for voice coil repair. Anyway not to get to confused one pair is working and sounding great. the fourth picture shows the laundry basket damaged woofer that was semi repaired in my mind. they actually sound quite powerful anyway. The 6th picture shows the other matching pair ( except one is in shop for voice coil repair) I also have pics of the fancy looking BW's that these dynaco's just out perform by leaps and bounds, quite amazing the bw's were not cheap and all the dynaco's shown were resale shop finds some with covers still on them I'v run out of room for pics but would love to show more gear as well in another post, i even have more dynaco A25 i can show more in future posts, One pair looks so old the grill is on top instead of bottom but it also appears the paper wore down, unlike the other pairs that seem to have better made woofers. I will share more pics soon thanks for the advice vern wish i knew you in person would love for someone like you to work on my gear. Yes i'm a dynaco A25 nut.
  12. Hi i have a few questions about restoration. What happens if you had a A25 woofer that was abused to the point woofer was pretty frayed/ ripped but went in for a repair ( van l speakerworks chicago) does this mean the roll over is not as good on it? is a woofer compromised due to repair if other one is in mint condition ? What happens if you replace just the resister on the crossover of an A25 ? How come dynaco A25s sound slightly different from one another ? I think i have the scan and the seas version, the scan version seems a little deeper on the bass response. but i could be wrong. Last question, can you find modern dynaco A25 woofer replacements? and if so how do they compare to the original sound wise and how much do they cost ? ( i looked but they were out of stock)
