  1. One of several high-end speakers I’m offering for sale in Washington, DC. I have TWO, both in Cherry. One though has Silver aluminum grill and caps, the other has Black aluminum grill and caps. Both in beautiful condition. Listed with lots more details and photos on both USAudioMart and the Washington, DC Craigslist.
  2. Following up my own post, I lucked out. Ordered a set of Dayton Audio Heavy Duty Binding Posts, and the securing nuts fit beautifully. A close match, too, which suggests BA used high quality hardware. (Have no use for the rest of the binding posts. I doubt I’ll ever find a matching link though, so I’ll have to make due with speaker wire.)
  3. Updating my last post, it’s a good thing I didn’t order the above terminal cup. The seller advises the securing bolts are *not* removable. Apparently, they’re captive to the shaft, like those on the Mirage OmniSat. Just one more thing I’ll have to confirm before ordering anything.
  4. I’ve been tempted to try a generic terminal cup, sometimes listed on eBay or Amazon as a “Parts Express 266”. If it’s compatible, I’ll get the link and the securing nuts. If it’s not, I’ll have wasted the money and/or time to return. I’d assumed “common size” until finding my high-end Revel and Snell used a different size, and my hardware store couldn’t match the bolt. I also find packs of loose binding post assemblies, with no guarantee their nuts would fit the BA’s posts.
  5. I’ve got five pairs of primary speakers, and looking to get down to two or three. These Quad 21L’s retailed for $1,200, but I’m open to reasonable offers. Modified from the original as one had a bad tweeter, and I ended up replacing both with what I think are better tweeters. I would prefer a local sale, but I have everything, including the original packing. (They’re packed up, so just need shipping labels.) Contact for more info.

    EPI M50

I went through two pairs of Epicure 100s during my college years, then owned a set of Epicure 400 mini-towers before moving to Allison’s. I seem to recall an EPI 100 variant that had a vinyl wood, rather than a walnut finish. Maybe the different moniker broadly represents the different finish.
  7. I recently acquired a set of VR-M50s in Cherry, and I am quite impressed by these little guys. Frequency Response is smoother than on my other, larger speakers, with surprising bass in a modest room if you don’t push it. Unfortunately, it’s missing one of the HF-LF metal links, and two of the securing nuts. At first, I assumed these were a standard size. I borrowed NIS first from my Meadowlark Kestrels, then from my Snell CLS .5, and both fit. But then I tried those from an LCR7 (also Snell) and it was slightly small or the threads didn’t match. Then I tried those from a Revel M22, and it’s way smaller! I went to the hardware store, hoping to find a generic nut that might fit. The guy tested the BA nut against the US and Metric sizes he carries, but found no match. so where might I find the right size parts, given that in my collection I’m finding three different sizes? I could take a shot on Amazon, and send it back if it doesn’t fit. Not so easy to do on eBay. I appreciate any suggestions.
  8. I did minor crossover work on a set of CD6’s, and had a major reworking done on a set of CD7’s. The CD6 set was bought off eBay, and one of the tweeters wasn’t working. Further testing showed the tweeter was fine; the problem was in the crossover. Since it is just a simple coil a cap design, I replaced the capacitor with an Erse cap costing just a few bucks, and it came back to life. The results were so good I replaced the cap in the other to match. One of the CD7’s had a tweeter that was working, but its frequency response was all over the place. A local speaker designer took on the challenge of “reworking” the system, putting in place a more “modern” tweeter, and building a new and complex crossover for it, and the same for the second (otherwise working) speaker. The results were less than satisfying, and I eventually sold this set, which was not easy as it was no longer a “real” Allison.
  9. I had a nice set listed locally and on USAudioMart for quite a while that was finally sold a few months ago. It was the last of my Allisons, and the one I was most reluctant to see go. (I’d earlier sold a set of Ones - replaced by Revel M22s - and a pair of modified CD-7s.) I’d already done a recap (with reasonably priced Erse caps), which was an improvement on the original. The CD-6 was a remarkable little box, especially as they did so much “wrong”. The box, being a near perfect cube, just invited internal standing waves. There was no bracing whatsoever, just some stuffing, and a knuckle-test makes it sound like the hollow box it is. And the drivers faced myriad sharp edges, so there was lots of diffraction going on. So why did it sound so good? Well, they seem to have gotten a few things right. The requirement for close to wall mounting simplified placement while smoothing out lower/mid bass. That little paper tweeter had surprisingly broad radiation. And that back wall acted as a large reflector, making for a large sound, at the obvious expense of tight imaging.
  10. They don’t show up often, but I finally spotted and acquired a pair of Snell CLS .5 speakers in White. Just one significant finish flaw Ithat a few drops of white paint should take care of. Unfortunately, the seller didn’t have the mounting brackets. (How do owners lose this stuff?) They look proprietary, but will serve better than expensive Omnimounts if anyone knows where to find them or their like. I’ve currently got them on 30” stands doing surround duty. For those that don’t know them, they’re like a poor man’s Paradigm Sig 1 - a cast and braced aluminum cabinet, not a conventional MDF/Wood box. FR is -3dB down at 80 Hz, so calls for a sub if used as mains. (I’m running them with Snell K7s in front, and LCR7 in the center.)
  11. Currently working through some of my audio "excess". Of possible interest to this group is a vintage set of Allison CD-6 speakers in a very attractive oak finish. Drivers were in great shape when I last had these units open, and they still sound fine. I had them open to recap the crossover - I hadn't a bad capacitor in one, I replaced it with an Erse capacitor, and I was so pleased with the result I replaced the cap in the other speaker. Grills are in good shape. Veneer is good too, except for a tiny veneer chip in the back corner. Available for pickup in Washington, DC. Asking price I see $225 - way down from the original asking. There are lots more photos in the CL posting.
  12. I purchased one of those PL-71s back when I was a "poor struggling"'grad student. Replaced it with a Thorens TD-145 Mk II, then passed the PL-71 on to an old girlfriend. I should have held onto it. I never imagined it would gain a following years later.
  13. Sold. I plan to put a listing for Allison CD-6 speakers shortly as I continue selling some of my audio inventory.
  14. Working to trim down my stock of speakers. The QBX 15 are nice compact monitors wrapped in real Cherry veneer. One of the later series before Snell unfortunately closed shop. Full details in my USAudioMart posting: https://www.usaudiomart.com/details/649696602-snell-qbx-15-bookshelf-speakers-cherry/ This set is also listed locally for a few dollars less only because locally I don't have to eat PayPal fees. Send a PM with any questions. If folks would prefer a full description here with photos, I can do that for this and for items to follow.
  15. I wonder if it would be possible to send photos of the drivers and the back connections on those Allison Threes. That would tell us a lot about what's in them. Also, if you could provide a ZIP, I'd want to check with a nearby UPS Store to see what it would cost to package and ship them. I know some shops will even fetch them. The original Threes show up on rare occasion, but they're typically 40-odd years old and not in great shape. Yours are from the '90s and look to be in nice shape. Thanks.
