  1. Simple question: Is there a way to spray or place DeoxIT into the switch on a New Advent? I am having problems with one being highly resistive on one position.
  2. I did more work on one pair of my New Advent speakers. I added sound deadening mat to the back of the woofer frames. I’m not sure if the mat does much, but it may, and some claim it improves the sound. I added braces from the baffle to the rear panel above and below the woofer. Previously I rebuilt the crossovers with Parts Express audio grade film capacitors and resistors. I used a 1.5 ohm resistor instead of a 1.0 ohm resistor for R2 to compensate for the lower ESR of the film capacitor. In addition to the original five foam blocks, I added poly fill. I bought a Parts Express DATS Version 3 and I love it. I used it to “tune” the amount of fill. I came up with a final result of F3 of 40.5 Hz and Q of .85. (The free air resonance is 19 Hz.) The completed speakers are very close to each other in terms of the impedance and phase curves, F3, Q, etc. They sound good to me as they always have. I use the “normal” position of the switch. It’s a little bright, but I like the forwardness of the sound. The “extended” position is terrible. I think Kloss used it as a “showroom” setting. I can readily hear the cone breakup of the woofer since the inductor is out of the circuit. (By the way, the inductor is not iron core as many have stated. It appears to be, but there is no core in the former.) The “decrease” position is the most accurate, at least for my room. One other bit of information: the Advent metal frame replacement woofers, sold by Simply Speakers, Speaker Exchange, etc, are crap. I bought four several years ago and they measure even worse than the advertised parameters. I could hear they were lacking bass, but I didn’t realize how much until I got the DATS. The free air resonance is 35 Hz not 26 Hz as advertised. It should be below 20Hz. In the enclosure with the five foam blocks, the resonance is 53 Hz and Q is 1.2. Terrible.
  3. Is Advent 1 woofer identical to the New Advent woofer?
  4. I want to buy two New Large Advent woofers. Metal frame, square magnet, original cone and voice coil. Surround condition is not important. Thanks
