Model 27 and 17 combo, a nice pairing.

I picked up a model 27 KLH receiver off Bartertown for a mere $50 a couple weeks ago. A neat little unit. Followed that with a pair of great condition model 17 speakers. I figured the two would do well together and i was right. Pretty sound and good imaging. The 17's have been re-doped so the bass is very present. I like it. Would be an outstanding master bedroom or office set-up. I need badges for the 17's.

David,

That's a nice combo. The Seventeens should be recapped: One 8uF and two 2uF per speaker. They have the old PVC Callins type caps and they are very prone to leakage. The 27 is a nice little receiver but it's old, so I'd have it looked at by a qualified tech. I've had a couple of those and they both needed at least some work. Cool old MCM design goes well with the console in the photo.

I have some nice reproduction KLH logo plates as shown here: http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showtopic=6002

PM me if interested.

Thanks JKent. Now I don't need to open them up to check the values on the caps! Should be easy enough. Compiling a large enough order to off-set the shipping costs. Have you found a sound preference for the KLH's between the various cap brands?

The 27 has been to a tech and was serviced with some misc stuff done to it. A crackle remains that happens at times so there are probably some bad caps or similar somewhere. Sounds pretty good otherwise.

I will need to get one badge from you. For some reason I already have one of the 1 3/4" ones. I also have 32's and 23's that might need badges. I'll check and email you.

I like Carli. They're inexpensive and Roy says their ESR is close to the originals. Carli comes in 8uF and 2.2uf. If you want exactly 2.0uF you could use their 1.0 or go with Solen. Madisound does have some 2.0 surplus caps that are nice but the leads are only 1/2" long which is annoying.

The sweeetest sounding receiver I have ever heard and owned was a KLH Model 52A. I believe it was rated at 33wpc RMS, and also had the DynaQuad ambience recovery system aboard. The rear speakers were hooked up via RCA inputs on the receiver, requiring you to fabricate speaker cables with male RCA's at one end, and bare wire at the other ends. It also lacked a separate volume control for the rear speakers. Those were the only squawks that I had with it. I never used it with the DynaQuad circuit employed, but I am a big fan of the original QD-4 Quadaptor and what it can add in realism to a system when used judiciously, and with four of the exact same speaker.

I've had an awful lot of receivers go through here over the years, but that little KLH was a standout. Just as sweet as syrup when used with New England classics.
