and I wish it wasn't such a dum Question I have to ask ...I bought a pair of HD-10's ..with a SW-10 sub for 100 bucks and felt I got burnt on the deal .After I .blew the surrounds out of them HD-10's... took the woofers out and found one of the speakers wasn't wired ...and had no magnet on the back of it ...so I'm not too happy ...now another deal came my way... I bought a pair of A-70s for 40 dollars ...that have replacement woofer in them to fill in for my HD-10's ...hoping to fix some day..well if another deal came my way ...404v center channel pv600 sub and a pair HD-9's and a Denon 3300 ....sounded awesome ..well if Pink Floyd ..didn't rip the surrounds out of the HD-9s as well ...so I pulled the woofers out of them to find neither of them have magnets or are wired .... QUESTION are they designed not to have magnets or be wired and if so why is one of my HD-10s wired ...I'm sorry if this is just a dum question ..I haven't talked to my buddy who sold me the HD-10s in over a month cause I think he ripped me off ....and now wonder maybe I'm the Fool ..Email Boston about replacement woofers for the HD-10's and they said no replacements speakers available ...But today I opened the HD-9's and found no magnets ..so I have to ask ....Thanks Dave

Hey brother the only dumb question is the one thats never asked. We all learn and satisfy our curiosities by asking people questions.

Those wireless, magnetless speakers are actually passive radiators. They work in conjunction with the woofers to flatten and extend the low end response of the woofers in reproducing bass frequencies. Call your buddy and tell him what you just learned.

Ok they are designed like this ..with woofers that have no magnets or wired .... I'm in shock .. took my HD 10's apart again ...and neither is wired ... was my SW-10 that was wired ... be nice to find more info on these speakers ..but it's hard to find ... and I've looked hard ..glued the surrounds back on ... be ordering new ones ..still they sound good ...man do i feel dumb..yeah be calling my buddy hopefully a case of beer will smooth things over ...and thanks for the schooling [passive radiators] I thought they were something else as well ...dave

Here's a better way of looking at it:

The HD-9 and HD-10 are ported (bass reflex) speakers. But instead of having a port tube, they have a "passive radiator" instead. This passive radiator (sometimes called a "drone cone") is tuned to provide the same system low-frequency extension that a port tube would be tuned for. The advantage of a passive radiator is that it will never make the kind of extraneous, intrusive "port chuffing" noise that a port tube can make. The disadvantage is that a port tube won't run out of excursion like a passive radiator can. But simply "ignore" the appearance of the 10" passive on the HD-10 (or the 8" passive on the HD-9) and think of them both as a 6 1/2" 2-way ported system, one in a slightly larger enclosure than the other. That's what they are, plain and simple.

Boston wasn't trying to 'pull the wool over your eyes' or anything like that. The 9 and 10 are actually great-sounding speakers, with solid bass and a truly terrific Boston-built 1" soft dome tweeter.

The SW-10 was a ported 10" subwoofer. You may need to replace its surround by now, but if I remember correctly, the rated LF response was -3dB at 34 Hz. It was a solid performer.

Thanks for the info ...man can't believe it a 6 1/2 woofer that drives these speakers ..I'm very impressed ..the SW10 not so impressed ....my PV 600 blows it out of the water ...10 fold ,,, so the SW10 is now a couch vibrator ...does a good job of that .. sitting an inch behind the couch wired into the front mains ....Dave

There is no question in my mind that the PV-600 was the best price/performance subwoofer Boston ever did. A remarkable unit. I was very impressed with almost all BA products from the mid-90's thru the very early 2000's.
