new info on my ar 4x system

If you recall I had a Marantz 2226 connected to my refurbished ar 4x for what I thought very good fm sound. I decided to spend some bucks on the amp as I really liked the looks and sound of it. I sent it in to a retired fellow who worked on Marantz in the 70s and up. He put in all new electrolitics all audio quality. replaced some transistors that were weak, resoldered all connections, took apart all controls and cleaned, set all specs to the Marantz service manuel including the tuner section as that is all I use the system for as mn public radio has fantastic sound. He then let it run 24=7 at different power levels to high power 8 ohm resistors for a week , rechecked all alignments and then shipped it back to me.

Wow what a difference tight, solid rock solid bass, and clear clean mids that are really fantastic on strings I do admit on listening to jazz at louder volumes I boost the treble to about the 3 oclock position to hear the cymbals better.

These speakers really kick ass on the low bass. It is unbeliable how much good solid bass that I have. The foam surrounds with the 5/8 advent 8 inch foam surround I used to replace the cloth that was smeared with some foam restoration goup really made a difference in deep bass. The entire upgrade cost me 200.00. He checked output on the amp and with both channels driven to 8 ohm loads at 30 hz the amp section did 35 clean watts per channel . Not bad for an receiver rated at 27 watts per, I guess it is true these marantzs are under rated. I know that amt of power can cleanly push the 4x,s to 100 db and still sound clean.

cool...I know the F3 of a lot of the vintage AR's aren't much to write home about....my little AR18's -3db point is listed at 62hz, but with the sealed alignment and generally modest Qb, the gentle roll off yields pretty deep -10db point (which for my little 18's is still in the 40hz range), which I usually look at more than -3db, as positioning can get you some of that back (i.e. my 18's are on a ledge in the corners of my office, which should give a 6db boost in the low end)

....out of curiousity, who did your work on your marantz? I have a 2230 and 2265 that could probably benefit from some attention

No, I had a retired Marantz service tech do it. He took his time and did everything he would if it was for himself. Don't let the guys tell you Marantz looses is tube sound with new caps. Mine just sound cleaner and smoother. The truth to me is in the sound of strings and they are very smooth with the rebuild.
