AR-1 on that auction site

I saw this pair listed yesterday at about $65. That didn't last long. Bid is $1136.11 at this moment. Serial numbers look to be 07297 and 16570.

Yeah, watching that site is like reading the "tabloids" ... a bidding war on a rare item can draw a rather high price which doesn't always reflect the value of the item, or perhaps it reflects the value "at the moment." I've found it is best to avoid last minute bids.

Since I am not a collector I have no interest in the AR-1. Interesting to look at though. I've always wondered what the LST sounded like as I've never heard them. I would expect they'd sound a lot like my 3a's with better dispersion. That was the idea, wasn't it?

I just checked - the bidding has ended and they were not sold.

Wonder what went south.

I'm glad I bought my AR speakers years ago when they were cheap.

No way I'd be laying out a grand today for any AR speaker.

However, I can't blame anyone for getting as much as they can.

Good for them.

After all, no one's got a gun to your head.

O.K. O.K. if it should interest anyone, I’m the high-bidder on these LSTs.

I asked the seller about shipping and he said he would trust UPS or whomever to safely pack and ship.

Now, I know this could be a big problem waiting to happen, but I sort of feel my bid will be old-news as soon as it gets hot with this offering.

Some would ask: why would you want a fourth pair of AR-LST speakers. Well, cause I feel they’re an amazing speaker even though they will come with their own set of problems, such as tweeter replacement and such.

To address “Der’s” question, the LSTs are not like the wonderful 3a’s entirely, they’re similar, but almost worlds apart. Imagine a bigger AR-3a that has a huge sound-field and bigger bass output. I know, even I feel amazed each time I listen.

My favorite mid-range speaker of all time has to be the AR3a mid. It can handle untold amounts of power and it keeps on ticking just like my $35 Timex.

Now imagine four of them in one box, from 575 HZ on up. To me is quite amazing that they are handling so many of those frequencies on their own with out crying about it.

In fact my everyday fear is: how much longer can these mids take such power as I feed them on a weekly basis?

P.S. As usual, I have a strong feeling another person will get these, and so be it.

I'd bid the LST's up if I had the cash flow as they appear to be all original drivers and well treated cabinets and I'd probably drive and pick them up as well.

Good luck Frank, I'd like to see you get them. I can see them going over $2,000.

Oh, I despised the sound quality of vinyl back in the 70s with its limited dynamic range and surface noise so I transferred all my albums onto 7" reel tape using my Tandberg 9200xd. Most of my albums were only played twice -- once to listen and once to record.

The world has moved on, and it's back to vinyl for those with great old turntables from 40+ years ago while using new design cartridges.

The rendered quality of vinyl playback is way and far above most any source in my opinion.

Change has forced it's way in and I was ready with my old stuff that's still proving to be the best I've heard in the last 40+ years.

Really strange.

This thread started with an AR-1 Ebay auction.

I saw the bid at $1136.11 as Der noted.

Then I saw the bid ended in the "completed" section for $0.00.

Just now I couldn't find any reference to them on Ebay whatsover.

And to top that, it seems we are now talking about a pair of AR LST's.

I have a few guys that I deal with locally.

They pick up "stuff" at estate sales, flea markets, etc.

So now, for me, there 's no shipping, no games and no nonsense.

One of them actually lets me take the equipment home and try it out.

If I don't want it - no problem - just bring it back in the same condition.

Sorry about the hijacking. I threw out the LST's as something else currently on the auction site of interest. Figured wasn't worth it's own thread.

I'm OK with it really but the original post kind of got lost in the shuffle. I always wanted a pair of LST (or at least to hear a pair).

What I found interesting about this pair was the matching grill cloth (which isn't the standard issue) on speakers with such a wide spread in serial numbers. This cloth gives the appearance of diagonal lines behind the vertical gold thread. This may be one of the rare pairs where the owner ordered the speakers at different times and sent the cloth to the factory each time for installation.

My first and only bid early on was $1,500., they sold for $1545. and that almost hurt.

When I seriously considered possible shipping damage, I was relieved to lose.

I felt if there was a screw up or any damage, it would involve shipping and packing all over again for an added expense.

So, considering all of these variables I felt it best not to pursue them.

If another offering is with-in 200 miles or so where I could drive and handle them myself, I would gladly

go after them.

Not to worry, there is a 1-U up for $1650 ;) (lowered the price to 1250)

Best to at least include the item number such as 301796316245 and grabbing photos is nice for the archive.

Stan, you have the ideal acquisition model.

I'm at a point where I'm happy with the speakers I have and need to move some out, but there is always room for another ... sort of like a family thing.

Also need to focus on electronics next year.
