Dynaco A25 Tweeter Problem

Hi Everyone,

I recently aquired a nice pair of early Dynaco A25 speakers with Scan Speak drivers. They worked great for the first week than I noticed one of the tweeters started to cut out. If I increased the volume on tha amp the tweeter would come back on. It eventually would cut out and come back on with volume change.

I swapped out my amp and it did the same thing while other speakers were fine. I resoldered the wires to the tweeter, sprayed the tweeter pot with DeOxit, and just replaced the caps with Dayton 5.1's. Now the tweeter is not working at all. I assume that it was on its way out and has finally failed?

I have had a few pair of these in the past and never had a stitch of problems with any of the drivers. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Regards,

Joe

FWIW, Madisound is recommending this Seas tweeter to replace the A-25 tweeter.

A different cap may be needed. I know there's been some differences in A-25 caps (i.e. 5 uF and also 8 uF used).

Not an expert on the Dynaco speakers but apparently some A-25s had SEAS tweeters and SEAS recommends the tweeter Carl linked to as a replacement.

Here is a page on restoring the A-25 http://www.updatemydynaco.com/A25LoudSpeaker.html

Dan Joffe of updatemydynaco plans to try the SEAS 27TFFC and the cheaper Vifa Tymhpany D27TG35-06 from PE http://www.parts-express.com/tymphany-d27tg35-06-1-silk-dome-tweeter--264-1022

Joe, I have a pair of A-25's, one each (Scan/Seas). The Scan speaker has some non-spec woofer driver in it but the tweeter works fine and I assume it is the original one like yours. If all else fails, let me know and maybe I will just sell the tweeter to you. I've been looking for a Scan woofer driver but they are rare and apparently expensive when available. Plus the cabinets are in rough shape and probably beyond restoration. Good donor set. The pair works okay and I have them in my garage set-up right now.
