  3. I would tend to agree. I simply swapped mine since I was going for a gut rebuild from scratch and wanted to start with clean terminals. Its seems like these were originally built with the capacitors going in last so in theory, it would actually be pretty easy to just desolder the original caps and leave the resistors in place.
  4. I will be covering some cabinet restoration tips in the spring once it warms up a bit outside. I need to brush up on my knowledge with regards to surround doping but this will be covered as well.
  5. Would you be able to elaborate on the requirement for increased wattage on the 5 ohm woofer resistor? I would like to add this to the next installment of the video. I am also going to add some notes about the rare but possible failure of the terminal tie strip rivets. I had one KLH Five that suddenly developed terrible bass response and I eventually tracked it down to phantom resistance between one terminal tie strip and the XO plate. I had completely forgotten about this until I reviewed some of my old documentation and CSP posts.
  6. Hi everyone. It has been a long time since I posted on this forum. I have come a long way in my audio journey since first joining the forums here. I am now working as a full time audio technician and recently came across another beautiful set of KLH Model Fives. I wanted to take the opportunity to document a restoration from start to finish in an attempt to give back to the community that was so helpful to me when I was first getting started in audio repair. All three parts are available below: Part 1 - Dissasembly & Crossover Rebuild Part 2 - Cabinet Repair & Refinishing Part 3 - Cabinet Loading, Seals, & Testing
  7. HI,

I know its been a few years since you rebuilt your KLH model 5's. I'm interested in the total cost of parts. I'm looking at buying a pair near my home. The owner says there is a problem with their sound, so I figure there is a rebuild needed. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Joe

  9. Baski, A word of advice, be careful when you put the crossovers back in the cabinets. I forgot one of the insulating washers when I first put mine back together and I almost blew up the left channel of my power amp. Luckily a couple fuses blew and saved it. Its also a good idea to read the impedance across the terminals to make sure they are in an acceptable range for your amp. I think my XO's with Dayton/Solen caps measured under 4 ohm at rest. Also, be careful on the dual cap. I assumed I knew which way it went on my first recap and had some issues. Double check the schematic there. I have attached an image of one of my finished set of boards for reference in case you have not yet started, it may come in handy for cap placement. Any questions at all on the process let me know. I am just about to start my 4th Model Five Recap. -Ben

  11. Very cool sign and nice fix. After I read the first post I was going to ask for a video demo not knowing their would be instant gratification below. Modern dealer signs are lame compaired to this. I work at a home theater installation business and feel bad now for getting excited about our new Definitive Technology sign which was just their logo on a piece of black acrylic.
