Hi Jack and welcome to the CSP.

KLH Model Five speakers are well worth fixing.

There have been some threads here. I've done several myself.

If you are comfortable opening them up (by pulling the woofers) and soldering in some new capacitors and resistors your efforts will be rewarded.

The best speakers KLH ever made were the Nine (electrostatic), Twelve and Five.

Some of the capacitors in there are confusing because they are dual-value but we can guide you.

I'll see if I can find a link for you.

Earlier Fives were point-to-point wired, later ones had a printed circuit board. Here is a thread about hard-wired Fives http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/index.php?showtopic=2557#entry74180

You do NOT need big expensive caps btw.

Here is a thread on PCB boards:

I think you need to take a look inside. Carefully remove the woofer and the cloth behind it. Pull out the fiberglass stuffing and save it in a plastic bag, then look first for any loose or broken wires.

It does seem odd that BOTH speakers are completely dead. I doubt that all 8 drivers are shot so that just leaves the xo and associated wiring. Maybe another member has some thoughts.

I assume the amp you're using is good and it drives other speakers OK.

Jack,

I discussed your speakers with RoyC, one of the top experts here, and he agreed it seems unlikely all 8 drivers would be shot.

Make absolutely sure your amp and speaker wires are OK. Hook up another pair of speakers and be sure they work. If so, remove the woofer from one of the fives and connect the speaker wires directly to the 2 terminals. Keep the volume at a low but listenable level. Does the woofer work? You can do the same test for the 2 mids and even the tweeter--just don't blast it. If they all work then it's something in the crossover system. Could be as simple as a bad connection to one of the screw terminals. Also, the Fives have metal plates where the speaker connection terminals are. The #8-32 machine screws that go through the metal plate are insulated and if the insulators are missing the speakers will short out. See eBay item number: 281762803237. There are some good photos of the crossover and the metal plate.

Let us know what you find. Also maybe let us know where you are. If you get really stuck maybe there's a knowledgeable member nearby who'd be willing to have a look.

Yeah, I was thinking that way too much coincidence and I would check out wires/cables too.

What did you find JB? and welcome. Sweet speakers.

BTW, we all have had along the way the easiest simplest things cause us issues that we assumed were much bigger. Lets hope thats it in this case.
