The Last Naked AR-9 Goes Away

My son just sold his last spare set of "naked" AR-9 speakers - these came to us as a pair of orphaned empty cabinets that we restored a dozen years ago, and morphed into what can be seen in the last two photos.

They were the first AR-9 restorations where we chose to remove the Acoustic Blankets and vinyl stickers, as well as to drill into the base, and add speaker spikes. The cabinets were in awful shape, so they were completely stripped, refinished & repainted, and the grill cloth replaced on all of the panels.

In one of the photos, our short-lived experiment with a "factory-replacement" poly-cone 8" lower midrange can be seen.

The crossovers were still 100% original, with zero capacitor replacements, and no modifications. These speakers have acted like a test-control over the years, and all I'll say is that they sound remarkably like a properly-functioning AR-9. :)

ar_pro,

I'm not sure of the acoustical ramifications of removing the acoustic blankets but I really like the look of the AR9's naked! Beautiful job.

Might have to consider making my 9's nude!

John, I think the effects of the blanket are most apparent in smaller rooms - in spaces with more cubic feet, it's hard to detect any difference that you'd want to make book on.

For myself, merely removing the front grille panel seems to have a more discernible effect in most reasonably-sized rooms.

Thanks for the info.

If I do decide to remove the blanket it will be a while down the road....so many other projects in the way.
