  1. Accidentally spotted a listing in our local online marketplace a listing for a pair of AR-LST for an amazingly low price. Remarkably they were within 20km of home here in Tasmania. There cannot be many of these made their way down this far south The owner was happy to demo them and within a very short time I was the proud new owner of my second pair of LST. All drivers seem to be working and the woofers have recently been re-foamed, - I believe correctly. The only problems I can see aside from some goodly stains are that the veneer along the front edges are loose with some small bits missing. They appear to be late versions with rear terminals. So now begins some checking, replacing as required and a little bit of tidying up. The cat has already started work Stacked LSTs' perhaps???
  2. Great advice and thanks all A couple of pair of correct replacement fuses has arrived after a long journey (Thanks Larry) and it gets interesting The fuses in situ were 40amp whatever nondescript items. So effectively speakers were jumpered, so I guess I have not been pushing them too hard. Replaced and now to re-measure and think Kevin
  3. Certainly a good thought I hadnt swapped them over - was waiting for new ones to arrive. They are on order and sent, but mail across the pond is very slow at the moment
  4. No, not yet, so still not sure if my measuring approach is good. I tried the cardboard roll, but that was hopless except for basic y/n does a driver make sound. In any case, as soon as I get some quiet time, I will get onto some swapping and soldering and measuring - gently and carefully. I agree, in terms of letting go, it can get hard. In particular, the LSTs will work their way into being kept, because they start off ok and get much better with a little time.
  5. I have been using my LSTs now for a couple of years now. They are driven by a pair of Krell-KAS with a Burson Conductor 3XR providing preamp and DAC duties. Of late I have been worried that the tweeters have been getting old and I also felt that one side was down a little as the stage seemed a bit to one side. On the basis of never having enough spare drivers I have managed to collect 4 rebuilt tweeters and half a dozen very nice 200010-1 mids so time to test and replace any weak ones. Listening to the speakers, all drivers seemed to be working so I tried some cardboard tube to hear if any were down. About this point I realized that my ears were not up to this task and I just get confused so I broke out a sound meter and ran some measurements. After a bit of faffing about I created the attached set of measurements using a web based tone generator at a set volume. I measured twice and then swapped the speakers R:L, to check the amps were not an issue, and repeated. The measurements were all pretty repeatable and close, which was rather reassuring. The measurements were made with the Balance Level set at 1 and the results are an average of all samples. It seems to me that I could replace all the mids in L speaker and Tweeters 1,2,4,5 going from L to R then measure again. I could barely hear the 14,440Hz tone so the hearing isn’t as good as it was once. The speakers are currently front wired and while the tweeters are the same, the new mids are rear wired. So a little work to do there. I will obviously need to send the tweeters I remove off for refurb (once shipping from Australia improves) to keep some spares for the future. Comments and advice would be appreciated before I go berserk on the soldering Iron. Regards Kevin
  6. I have a pair of LST which are now my favourite speakers. I have one of the repaired LST/3a tweeters as a spare and would certainly be interested in more. Im in Hobart. Cheers Kevin
  7. I have ar-9, ar-90, ar-92, ar-6, ar-mst-1, ar-3A Improved, ar-LST Favorite for home listening is LST easily. Party Speaker ar-9
  8. Just before Christmas I managed to obtain a pair of AR-LST. I remember reading about them as a teenager - of course never being able to afford such a thing back then. I encountered some over the years on odd occasions on the bay, but never was able to get to them or have sufficient money. This is not helped by being way down the bottom of Australia in Tasmania which just adds complication (cost) to shipping. I already had managed to collect several AR speakers over the years such as 3a, 90, 9, 92, 6 and MST-1 but had always wanted to hear the LST. So when I saw a pair I jumped - well actually bid and paid up. Being overseas and having to get family to receive the boxes delivered from Perth to Tasmania (4,000km) was a bit of a complication but everything arrived in perfect condition and they are not that heavy as much as a bit awkward to move about. Now they have arrived and being home for Christmas I have set them up - they are fabulous! I dont have them up off the floor yet, but even so, they are superb speakers. I have been very fortunate as everything appears to be working, though I have yet to get a stethoscope out to check all drivers fully. The cabinets have good edges and all appears to be well - even the fuses look new. They dont have any number on the outside, so looking at the drivers will be the only age clue, but I think they may be later. They are a bit more laid back than the Infinities in the picture but not missing any detail that I can tell and have a wonderful soundstage. They are now connected to a Krell FBP-600c which does just fine and I have moved the Infinities out of the way for awhile. They may have become my favorites. For the moment I'm just enjoying them and playing my favorite tracks, but stands are on the to do list and the cat knows not to touch! Cheers and I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas Kevin
