Microstatic Tweeter Array Revisited

We've discussed these before and I've refurbished about half a dozen pair so far but they were all later versions.

Here are a couple of threads:

The earlier ones had two different size tweeters (4 in all): The outer ones were 1.75" and the inner ones were 1.25". All were made by Peerless Denmark.

For those who are not familiar with these, they were meant to enhance classic AR and KLH speakers. The sales lit said

"This is not a speaker. It's the missing part of YOUR speaker."

The very earliest ones, which I have not worked on, had Masonite backs, screwed on. In an apparent cost-cutting move they switched to black cardboard, glued on. The speakers are not Acoustic Suspension (no stuffing) and the cardboard can be pried off fairly easily.

All of the later ones I've seen had the infamous black and red PVC (Callins or Temple) caps but the earlier ones had film caps.

Attached are pictorial diagrams of an earlier version and a later one. The circuit design is very different for the 2 versions. Maybe some of you who are more familiar with crossover and filter design can explain the changes.

I had these. The early ones (I was not aware there were "later" ones).

I remember my friends and I pondering different variations of ARs and Micros, like 2x's + Micros vs. 2ax's and 1x's + Micros vs. 3a's.

When a got my Micros in Dec '73 (I had new 2ax's), I ran 15-ft cables with toggle switches on them, so I could do "on-off" A-B's from my listening chair in my parents' basement.

I eventually took my Dad's 4x's + Micros to college with me (my dorm room that year was too small for my 2ax's), and they sounded great--although the corners of the Micros were just a tick too wide for the 4x's cabinet and they overhung by about 1/4" or so on each side.

I was impressed with how closely the Micros' walnut and white linen grille matched the AR finishes.

Fun stuff.

Has anyone bought and used a Pyle HF Piezo horn tweeter array sold by MCM? The 6 tweeter array is similar to the Microstatic design, only this one has 4-27 kHz & 97 dB eff.

A friend of mine has a pair he uses with his AR's and asked me recently to fabricate grilles for them. The array does not come with a grille.

If any interest is shown, I will add pics and construction dimensions.

Definitely interested after listening to some cheap Advents for awhile along with my AR stacks I can see the need for an easy way to boost treble response on some material and was contemplating a top mounted tweeter array of some sort.

The specs on these look closer to my needs for use with the AR-6 stack and the set you mention on the AR-5 stack:
