Anyone service A-200s?

Way, way back in time, when I was a retail floor guy, and back when AR had been discontinued in my store (when the verticals were introduced) and we didn't have any "east coast" speakers in the place; I used to send people I liked across town to the guys who were selling the Bostons (and Advents and Klipsch and Yamaha and DCM Time Windows).

A friend bought a pair and I had the opportunity to ask him to look at their condition for me. The A-200 was still a new speaker company at the time he purchased them, so this is 25 years later.

He reports that his woofer surrounds are all in tip-top condition. That's amazing. They spent years in a DC basement apartment.

Has anyone had these speakers deteriorate on them?

I picked up a pair of A-150s that needed new foam.

I also picked up two pair (gluttony) of A-200s... one pair had been refoamed by the seller, and the other pair had new BA woofers installed. The ones with the new woofers, the seller threw in a pair of A-40s that needed foam.

So in Texas, that's four up, and four down.

My 200s needed new surrounds last year. I did the job myself, not difficult. I have also resurrounded three pairs of 40s. I am in the San Fernando Valley, north of Los Angeles. The surround kits were from Speakerworks Northwest (www.speakerworks.net).

Bret:

Just wanted to let you know I have had to put new surrounds on

my Boston Acoustics A200 speakers about 6 years ago. I bought my OAK covered A200s back in 1980 when I was in college

and they have been my pride and joy all this time. I really freaked out when I pushed on the surrounds back in 2000 and they were just mush. I bought a surround kit from Simply Speakers and I was hoping for the best but I was definitely skeptical they would sound right.

Putting the kit on was pretty straight forward and fairly easy.

Well, the A200s sound just as good as they ever had and I would like to think I'm good for another 20 years at least.

I wish everything I have would last as well as my stereo equipment has. Best wishes, Don W.

You need, what we called at BA, 'the special Moses formula', and the surrounds will never deteriorate. I still have a small bottle from 20 years ago. Has to be applied when surrounds are new.
