Is Allison still a real company ? I saw some Allison bookshelf speakers heavily discounted in the Parts Express catalogue. Are they likely any good ?

After sleeping on it I realize that response was a bit terse. Here's the story: The Allison company was revived in Kentucky, with new versions of their old speakers at MUCH higher prices, but it failed. Writing in the Yahoo! Allison forum 4 months ago, Roy Allison (himself) wrote:

"To sum up, there's no chance that the Kentucky operation will be revived. There may be some other avenue for a revival, but I'm not able to speak further about that."

That last part is a bit tantalizing, but the short answer to your question is still "no"

cheers

I was interested. so I emailed PE. Here's what they said:

-----------------------------------------------

Thank you for contacting Parts Express. In answer to your question, we only have a few (21) of the 309-108 remaining in stock. Here are the details:

309-108 Allison REF402 SAAT Right/Left Speaker Pair

The SAAT loudspeakers were designed for solid bass reproduction and focused stereo imaging. A 6-1/2" woofer in a tuned-port enclosure ensures an extended frequency response while the offset paper-cone tweeter minimizes edge diffraction. Specifications: *Power handling: 30 watts RMS/60 watts max *Impedance: 8 ohms *Frequency response: 50-20,000 Hz *Sensitivity: 88 dB 1W/1m *Dimensions: 23" H x 9-1/4" W x 7-5/8" D. * *

Pricing per pair:

1-3: $35.00 4 or more: $32.00

This item is not currently being advertised and is not available on our website. However, please feel free to place an order by phone and specify part number 309-108.

--------------------------------------------------------

So...I phoned. Nobody there could tell me who they were made by or what they looked like. No pictures. Sales transferred me to tech and they don't know either. Said they "might" have photos up on the web within the next few days. I sorta doubt it if they only have 21 in stock.

My best guess: They aint Allis. Never heard of model "REF402" and as far as I know, Allis were all AS, not ported. And is there ANY way an Allison could be had for $16 each????

I happened to pick up a few brand new pairs of SAAT REF-303BK Bookshelf Speakers (Stanford Advanced Acoustic Technology). They look like actual books and sound pretty good to me. A friend told me that they were related to Allison Acoustics in some way, but wasn't very clear. Owner's manual doesn't say much except that they are located in 470 Stanford Avenue Danville, Kentucky 40422. That's the same address as Allison Acoustics... Allison may have started up as SAAT, I don't know... Any info would be appreciated.

REF-303 BK

nominal power - 20w

max music power - 50w

S.P.L - 86dB/W-m

impedance - 8

freq. range - 130Hz~20KHz

resonance freq - 130Hz

As Allison in Kentucky was closing shop a few years ago, I was all over the web trying to find out what I could. Several audio companies were run out of the same building at 470 Stanford Ave. ; S.A.A.T. ;possibly "Stanford Acoustics" too?, Allison Acoustics, a pro audio company(?) maybe more? All run (owned) by the same people. I'm thinking the combined effort was to revive Allison, unfortunately that didn't happen and they all closed up. At least that's what it looked like to me. I never did get to see or hear any of the new Allison's. The pictures looked real sharp!
