I'm looking forward to what these will sound like refoamed. The original tweeters are date stamped Nov. 1973, so I'm guessing these may have the later XO. Replacement was stamped 1974. (I keep typing 1994...was it that long ago?)Do I recall correctly these can beneift from some extra internal bracing? I have the utility cabs. Not particularly pretty but not too bad looking. I used 1 x 1" oak but an old broom handle would work nicely--nice round smooth hardwood.Also note he replaced the foam blocks with fiberglass. I did too. Others have noted the FG improves sound. Lowe's sells little rolls of Johns Manville unfaced FG. Each package weighs about 11 oz. Will pick up some FG too.These were thrown in with some Snell E/II's I bought recently. I wasn't expecting much from the Advents, so maybe it's just a matter of surpassing low expectations, but I really like the way these sound. alkermes Posted March 11, 2013 Author Report Share Posted March 11, 2013 Well a followup...just recapped these with PeX 16uf caps from Erse, and replaced the resistors also with 3ohm 10 watt resistors. I am really amazed at the difference. They sounded good after the refoam, but now the high frequencies are much clearer, I could listen to them all day. DON Posted March 12, 2013 Report Share Posted March 12, 2013 Good to hear of another Advent restoration. I bought a few tweeters a couple of years back when they were very cheap and they're all good. As much as I love the ARs I have I always appreciate the simplicity of the Advent when I'm working on them. All of mine have very nice cabinets with either the bull nose or rounded trim and all have nice grilles now. I had to do some minor refinishing and I bought one grille off e-bay and found out that not all Advent grilles are the same size. Once I got over my fear of trying to refoam I found out it's really very easy.Post some photos of your Advents if you can. I've tried but I can't get the resizing process on my I Mac figured out. Open picture file (I often use the Preview viewing application).2. From the File menu, click on Save As.3. Under format, click on JPEG.4. Under Quality, move slider to left until noted file size is 100 KB or less.5. Rename file (if desired), choose file location, click Save.Also, if your Mac has the Grab utility application, this is a terrific tool for easily capturing all sorts of images from your computer screen. My speakers are the utility cab version, not as beautiful as those nice wood cabs - but not not too bad either. Fortunately the grill cloth is in decent condition if maybe a little musty.I have them in the kitchen where the system gets daily duty, currently hooked up to a Pioneer SX-950. I swapped out a pair of ADS LS520's. Overall I prefer the LS520's, but these are good speakers. Gotta love that OLA bass! It's possible the sound may change if it's true that caps break in.
