TrueBluePhil
I have two pairs of small advents that i just purchased them for $50 and the woofers need redone with new surounds. They even have the green egg tweeters in them. The main question is where can I get new surounds for the woofers. I have done a few large Advents with the metal baskets but never these. Doug G.
You got TWO pair of Smaller Advents for 50 bucks? Why you son of a...I mean congratulations! Anyway, Carl, do you have those surrounds? Not all suppliers have the Smaller Advent surrounds since they are a special size. I think Rick Cobb has them. And maybe some of the other better known vendors on eBay.Doug
Carlspeak
Doug, as noted on my website, I don't sell surrounds.
TrueBluePhil
Yea deals like this don't happen very often in Iowa. We just don't have the numbers. On the foam surrounds I emailed MSound and they said they have them. I have to measure the woofer diameter to confirm. I am excited to get these back up and playing. Will let you know how things turn out.You got TWO pair of Smaller Advents for 50 bucks? Why you son of a...I mean congratulations! Anyway, Carl, do you have those surrounds? I would suggest however that you ask John (MSound) what to do about the dust cap. He's a strong advocate of shimming but as I understand it, that "spit-wad" cap has some special properties and should be retained. One possible method is to carefully slice all around the edge of the cap but leave a bit (maybe 1/4" or so) as a "hinge" and flop the cap back, then shim. The shims are good not only for centering but also for holding the cones at the correct height as you work on them.I found a post on AK that said "If you are careful, you can remove the dustcap with little to no damage. Various tools cab be used to work your way around the joint between the cap and cone like an excato knife and a flat blade screw driver. Both the cone paper and the spitwad dustcap are pretty thick, but with caution they can be separated intact."Can't vouch for that though.Kent
TrueBluePhil
I did talk to John about the caps and he said that the original caps were that way to help increase the bass in the smaller cabinet. What it actually does is make the cone weight more so he suggested adding some weight to the new caps. He said he has used pennies to do this. He suggested to remove the original cap and weight it. Then weight the new cap and add weight to it ¨neil it gets to be the same as the old one. I might just do the 30 Hz signal to do the reforming and then just leave the original caps on them. What do you guys think?PhilCongrats PhilI'm a big fan of MSound--they're the only supplier I use for surrounds. I would suggest however that you ask John (MSound) what to do about the dust cap. Pete B
Try to keep the original dust cap, it VERY strongly influences the midrangeresponse of the woofer and this is VERY important since the woofer works wellup into the midrange. You won't have Advents anymore if you change it.

RoyC
I agree with Pete as well...Although I am a huge fan of shimming the voice coil when replacing surrounds, the Small Advent surround is very easy to replace without shimming...so no need to remove that unusual dust cap if you are careful. The voice coil gap is relatively large and forgiving, and the unique replacement surround fits very well. The surround's roll centers the cone when the inner lip is glued just as the original surround was, to the under side of the cone.Roy
TrueBluePhil
Yep this is what I am going to do then. I will leave the original caps on them. Can't wait to hear these babies play. I will put pics up when I am done with them.
TrueBluePhil
Just to let every know I haven't picked the speakers up at my sons house yet. He lives in Milwaukee and I haven't been up there yet. I think he is coming down in a couple weeks so he will bring them with him. The I will re-foam them without removing the original dust caps. AudiAl
Hope I'm not too late with this.Phil is right - you must retain the dust cap. But I disagree about refoaming without shimming. This is tricky at best and sometimes won't even work - the VC needs to be centered, using a tone. True, the Smaller Advent has a huge gap - but that just makes it easier to get the VC in the gap w/out rubbing, but not optimally centered. Woofers w/ larger gaps are harder to center w/out shimming. That said, how do you do it? Simple: cut the dust cap off and shim the VC. The DC is about a quarter inch thick so what you do is, using a brand new Xacto, carefully slice it off close to the cone surface. The flat edge makes this fairly easy but you have to take your time & saw it off. Mark the DC & glue it back on later. ..... Make sure the VC is centered vertically with spider flat, top edge of cone even with top of the frame. Test the woofer first to see if that's where it centers. .... I assume you have the right surround - it under attaches to the cone. ....... I have a part time speaker repair bus. & have done many Advents - just did a pair of Smallers a couple weeks ago. I have never been able to center an Advent woofer properly w/out shimming.
Mystery
I refoamed Smaller Advents last week using AA battery and it's perfect.I've never cut dust caps.I use either 30 hz tone or AA battery. Both method work great but now I like battery as it doesn't vibrate the surrounds while glue sets.I've done around a dozen so far including JBL L100T the same way and all are a success and never had to shim.Edit: added picture. TrueBluePhil
Hi All,I have finally re-foamed 2 of the 4 speakers and I have say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality sound that these little speaker sound like. The bass is strong and uniformed and the tweeters sound like advent tweeters. Anyhow attached is a before and after. Was going to sell them but I just might keep them for bedroom.BTW, These woofers were re-foamed correctly. I didn't remove the caps by using a AAA battery to center the voice coil and I placed the inside foam edge under the lip of the outer cone and the outer edge on the top of the metal basket. Let me tell you guys it makes a difference to use the correct foams and replace them correctly just like Advent did.I have preveiously done a NLA incorrectly and after redoing it I am am totally convinced that incorrectly placing the foam edges effects the sound negatively. Thats my story and I am sticking to it.
