dxho
Very nice. Interesting to read in 6110 that one out of fifteen 'AR3 tweeters and AR2a super-tweeters' 'never makes it to the cabinet'. I'd imagined a worse ratio. And aren't those the same driver?
ra.ra
Sheesh, I first thought that crumbly gray dust was a typical disintegrating foam surround, but I remembered that I was working on a speaker with cloth woofers and not foam, and I now realize that I was looking at cigar ash! I'd imagined a worse ratio. And aren't those the same driver? The AR-3 and AR-2a 1⅜-inch were the same unit, although I've seen "a" written on some units. The impedance was the same for both. As for "rejects," there was a high percentage of all AR drivers that didn't make it on the first try, and for this reason I've said often that to rebuilt an old AR tweeter is very difficult, at least to get it anywhere near flat response. Getting a tweeter to work is one thing; getting it to sound like an original is another thing.—Tom Tyson
tysontom
A little selection of Acoustic Research magazine advertising from the mid-'50s, through the early 1960s.(The year and month are indicated by the file name)By the way, the "year and month" noted in ar_pro's message above is in reference to the date of the magazine in which the ad was placed, not necessarily the date of the actual ad itself. Some ads were used for a year or more.—Tom Tyson
stupidhead
I have been enjoying this thread and have a question related. I realize most if not all of what ar_pro has posted here is from Audio magazine, 60's vintage. I have heard reference to other mags having their (AR) ads in their pages. Is there a resource or even just a list of what these publications are. My interest would be up to around mid 70's for a time frame. We often go antiquing and you never know what you might find for a stash of periodicals for sale. Buying mags and cutting out the ephemera is way better than buying a reprint from the bay! I am interested in similar time frame Marantz and earlier HK ads as well if anyone happens to have that knowledge. Geoff
owlsplace
Magazines from the 70's that I remember buying or having a subscription to were IIRC, High Fidelity, Stereo Review, and Audio. Roger
ar_pro
Roger has covered the Big 3 from the USA. The High Fidelity people also published "Stereo", which was a quarterly that ran from the late '60s to the early '70s; and Stereo Review put out "Annual" editions for both home audio and tape equipment. owlsplace
I've been sampling "audioxpress" to kinda stay in the loop lately ... a couple of driver ads but no speaker ads these days. It's a whole new world ... Roger
bassment142
Reading these remind me of the main point of the Titanic movie. The oceanographer finally "understood" what the experiance of the titanic was after her story. Before that it was just an old boat at the bottom of the sea. This really makes me appreciate my 3as. DavidDru
Interesting that they were promoting Mahogany and birch for the base finishes on the AR3. Maybe we all actually have Mahogany!
