The link below takes you to a thread over at audiokarma.org. The thread contains a 10 pg. downloadable document detailing the mod.

http://www.audiokarm...ad.php?t=308869

Basically, the KLH-17 Plus is a high quality monitor loudspeaker comprised of an ultra-smooth Fountek ribbon tweeter, German designed HiVi kevlar impregnated paper cone bass-mid and custom fabricated baffle board.

Very pretty, Carl. I'm sure they sound great, but I'm not seeing any "KLH 17" in them. You could call them "KLH-17 Minus KLH-17"!
Just kidding...I know existing cabinets are valuable to speaker builders and tinkerers. Nice cabinets are not easy to build and expensive to purchase.

I just give the customer what they ask for. :D

Good work, Carl!

90° horizontal constant directivity extending through the top octave, looks like, "moderately wide" by my definition, and the vertical nulls fall outside the 9° listening window.

The image was perfectly centered with a wide soundstage and a sparkling clarity which astounded me. I had not heard this kind of clarity from numerous speakers I’ve worked on over a number of years having more convention[al] dome type tweeters.

Modern domes have excellent clarity, but cannot match the horizontal dispersion you achieved using these ribbons.

[Is there an eWave variant and a shootout in the offing...? ]

Yes, it happened and the 17 Plus's were well received by the large group of audiopiles present. The eWaves - not so much. You should try a plus mod if you have any spare 17 cabs left laying around. I'll get you the baffle boards, if needed. Once you've heard their clarity, you may decide to start a new mod-thread for those with a little more change in their pockets to spare for significantly improved sound over the e-waves. ;)

That statement is akin to the infamous "White men can't jump". We've got some rockers in the group. ;)

Cranking isn't necessary to enjoy good music. C'mon Z, all those sophisticated measurements to create overly loud rock music? Seems like a waste of talent to me. :(

Spectral accuracy is independent of musical genre, and complexity is most revealing of this quality; getting rock right is the more difficult task.

Realistic levels of most any genre are not "polite," and equal loudness contours are always part of the formula.

We had a contributor who posted here and was very enthusiastic. That is until he had his hearing tested and learned he was completely deaf above 2 khz. I have to wonder how many golden eared audiophiles have damaged their hearing permanently and severely by exposing themselves to literally ear shattering sound levels the way this guy did. I always thought it ironic that Edgar Villchur went into the hearing aid business after he left the speaker business. I wonder how many of his customers for his second products acquired the need by abusing his first products.

I did not get to hear these but I did get to hear Carl's pipe speakers last week while dropping off some Thiel drivers for repair. My god did they sound fantastic! I can vouch for Carl's ear for sonics.

Below is a pic taken at last Saturday's CAS meeting showing the group taking in the sounds of my "Poor Plumber's Pluto's". Here's link to more info.

I think the current term for it is: 'thinking outside the BOX".
