are there ways to improve the sonic performance of the lst loudspeaker?

If you have a capacitor and ESR meter, it's worth testing the caps in your LST to ensure they are still on target and replace any that measure beyond 10% of their labeled value and beyond 0.5 ohm ESR.

I've suggested that the auto-transformer can be eliminated which was later
confirmed by this letter from Roy Allison where he states that Tri-amping is possible:
