I recently uncrated a KLH Model 20 that I bought on ebay several years ago. It works. The speaker cable is about 3' long and I need more. Also need speaker cable to connect a cd player. Where can I find a comparable speaker wire ? Best Buy and Radio Shack can't help. thanks

Hi tuesday and welcome.

We could use a little more information. The KLH Model 20 was a 3-piece system consisting of a turntable with built-in amp and a pair of speakers. See this excellent article by CSP member Andrew Hayden: http://www.antiquera...yden_Kloss.html

The speakers are connected to the amp with RCA cables. The best replacement would be to make your own out of 18 ga lamp cord and male RCA jacks. If that's not something you want to do, you could use single RCA cables--one for each speaker. Something like this, although this is a coaxial audio cable and you are probably better off with 2-conductor speaker wire http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=2004&sku=03168

Your CD player would be connected to the AUX or TAPE input on the Model Twenty amp with regular stereo RCA cables, like these: http://www.cablestog...=2004&sku=40464

If you don't have the 3-piece system I described please post photos or give us more info.

thanks for very much JKent. I ordered the speaker cables. Will report back after I get and test them. Another question ? What about the power cord ? The 3 prong end that connects to the back of the stereo is severed, and replaced with just some electrical tape wound around these little jack heads. And it pulls out of the back. It is a Longwell E55333 3c 18awg cord. I found it online, but the end that fits the power unit looks too big...thanks again.

OK, now I'm stumped. I don't have a KLH compact system here to look at, except for a Model Eleven suitcase stereo, and that does have a removable cord. But I thought the Twenty was hard wired. Maybe we need some photos. That Longwell is definitely NOT what you want--that's an IEC C13 cord for a computer or printer etc. The KLH Twenty had a 2-conductor 18 ga cord with a non-polarized plug. You should probably find the place where the power cord connects to the circuitry inside and hard-wire a new cord.

Take a look at this site that shows "obsolete power cords" http://www.cs.ubc.ca...Conn/index.html The one designated "163" was used on old hp test equipment and appears to match the connector on the KLH Eleven. That's probably what you have on the Twenty. That article claims there is a Volex or Belden 3-prong cord that will work in the 163 jack. The part numbers are 17952 and 17280. I can't swear to it and apparently some versions have the pins switched. Might be worth following leads from that. I doubt you will find an original KLH replacement (check ebay but I doubt it). Since the Twenty is not portable, I'm sticking with the suggestion to just hardwire a new cord.

Here's another thought: At the bottom of the "obsolete connectors" page he discusses replacing the 163 connector with a standard IEC C14 jack like this http://www.parts-exp...source=googleps (if it fits). Then your C13 computer-type wire would work. But that's overkill. Look at this Wikipedia page for the various types of IEC connectors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_60320 Type C7 cords are common and are more suitable for audio equipment. Search for a C8 chassis-mount connector. Here's one: http://www.mouser.co...QQoj3AhrINJyYT7 Install that in place of the 163, then use a C7 cord. The original KLH 163 jack did have 3 pins on the jack but I'm certain the power cord was 2-connector and the middle pin was not used.
